Cybersecurity Researcher V.S. Subrahmanian to Join Northwestern CS and Buffett Institute

Subrahmanian will be jointly appointed between computer science and Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs

Renowned cybersecurity and counterterrorism expert V.S. Subrahmanian will join the Northwestern Engineering faculty on September 1, 2021 as Walter P. Murphy Professor of Computer Science with a joint appointment as faculty fellow at the Northwestern Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.

Subrahmanian is the first faculty member to be jointly appointed between computer science and the Buffett Institute, which brings together interdisciplinary experts across the University to address critical global challenges that cannot be solved from a singular disciplinary or geographic perspective.

Subrahmanian is a distinguished scholar, with expertise in the fields of data mining, logic, and machine learning,” said Samir Khuller, Peter and Adrienne Barris Chair and Professor of Computer Science. “With his focus on cybersecurity and globalization, he is poised to build a very strong partnership between the Buffett Institute and Department of Computer Science. We look forward to research from his team with great impact on major societal problems requiring partnerships across the globe.”

Subrahmanian is currently Distinguished Professor in Cybersecurity, Technology, and Society at Dartmouth College and director of the Institute for Security, Technology and Society at Dartmouth. Prior to joining Dartmouth, he served as tenured professor in the computer science department at the University of Maryland and as director of the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.

Subrahmanian is a world leader in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, predictive modeling, probabilistic inference and machine learning, social media, and counterterrorism. He has been an invited speaker at the United Nations, Capitol Hill, and the Mumbai Stock Exchange, has authored numerous publications, and his work has been featured in major publications including The Economist, Scientific American, The Wall Street Journal, and Nature.
