Nikos Hardavellas Wins 2019 EDBT Test-of-Time Award

Nikos Hardavellas and collaborators were awarded the 2019 Test-of-Time Award by Extended Database Technology (EDBT) during the EDBT/ICDT Joint Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, on March 27. The award recognizes papers presented at EDBT conferences that have had significant impact on research, methodology, conceptual contribution, or transfer to practice over the past 10 years.   

The honor was given for Shore-MT, a multithreaded database storage manager that demonstrated the importance of designing for scalability, even at the expense of single-thread performance, as the predominant way to harness modern parallel hardware resources. Shore-MT catalyzed and enabled substantial follow-up research, both in academia and in industry, and influenced the development of modern database engines for multicores.  

Hardavellas’s research interests are in computer architecture, primarily on techniques to enable extreme-scale multi-core processors.
