New e-book Explores Career Opportunities for MBP Alumni

Meet more than two dozen alumni who use the lessons learned in Northwestern Engineering's Master of Biotechnology Program (MBP) in a variety of roles and industries.

Biotechnology: In and Out of The Lab

Biotechnology is all about manipulating living organisms to produce useful products. Producing useful products can mean any number of things, from creating human insulin in microbes for treating Type 1 diabetes, to developing a vaccine to offset a global pandemic — and doing so in a fraction of the time vaccine development usually takes.

Just as there are many examples of what biotechnology is, there are countless roles and industries that benefit from employees who have backgrounds in the field. Alumni from Northwestern Engineering's Master of Biotechnology Program (MBP) leverage their MBP experiences for pharmaceutical companies and law firms, in project management and communications, at Fortune 100 companies, and in early-stage startups across the country and around the world.

To demonstrate the breadth of career opportunities that come with a biotech degree, MBP produced Biotechnology: In and Out of The Lab, a new e-book that highlights more than two dozen alumni using the lessons they learned in the program to make a difference in their respective field. This e-book introduces a variety of industries where having biotech experience is beneficial. It also explains how MBP prepares students for a better start to their career as well as for professional longevity and more senior positions.

Roles and industries highlighted in the e-book include:

  • Communications
  • Consulting
  • Data Science
  • Law
  • Leadership
  • Project Management
  • Regulatory Affairs
  • Science

In each section of the e-book, readers learn about the roles and industries discussed and get to know MBP alumni who are thriving in their chosen career path. Readers will also discover how MBP played a role in helping these alumni get where they are today.

"What the sciences teach you is a way of thinking — a way of critical thinking and logical thinking," said Nitika (Rewari) Chunilall (MBP '07), director of prevention and promotion initiatives at the Mental Health Commission of Canada. "MBP allows people to master that skill. I can take that skill and put it in any different field, and I will continue to think logically and methodically about any problem that I have."
