MBIOTECH 301: Balances and Kinetics for Bioprocessing (1 Unit)

Quarter Offered

Description

The first in a sequence of two transitional courses, designed to introduce non-engineers to the fundamentals of mass and energy balances, and kinetics. An important objective of this course is to prepare the students for the core sequence of two advanced Bioprocess Engineering courses (MBIOTECH 476-1,2).

Topics

MBIOTECH 301 will cover the following topics:

  • Chemical/biochemical Processes and process variables
  • Mass balances
  • Energy balances
  • Mole balances
  • Conversion and reaction sizing
  • Rate laws and stoichiometry
  • Reactor design
  • Collection and analysis of data
