Microelectronics

Microelectronics rests on the ability to make, pattern, and connect electronic materials with atomic precision. Northwestern research addresses the materials underlying logic and memory devices, including two-dimensional and organic semiconductors, dielectrics and interconnects, and flexible and printed electronics, together with the metrology needed to characterize them.

Integrated Photonics

Integrated photonics moves information as light rather than as charge, using waveguides, resonators, and nonlinear optical elements built into compact circuits. Northwestern faculty work on the materials and nanostructures that make this possible, including nonlinear and plasmonic media, metasurfaces, and optical sources and detectors.

Neuromorphic and Beyond-CMOS Computing

As conventional scaling slows, new devices and architectures are being built from materials that switch, remember, or compute in ways silicon transistors cannot. Northwestern research covers memristive devices, organic electrochemical transistors, and two-dimensional and oxide materials for in-memory and brain-inspired computing.

Quantum Materials and Devices

Quantum materials derive their behavior from correlation, topology, and coherence rather than from conventional band structure, and include superconductors, magnets, and topological phases. Northwestern faculty synthesize and characterize these materials and develop them toward applications, from superconducting wires and magnets to quantum sensing and information technologies.
