1. Mechanical Engineering Assistant/Assoc Prof - Manufacturing
The Mechanical Engineering Department at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in manufacturing. Outstanding candidates may be considered at the Full Professor level.
We seek candidates with a solid technical foundation who have a vision that addresses grand challenges facing our society with passion and excellence in research, education, and inclusion. Areas of interest include: in-situ process metrology and data analytics of manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing, and chip manufacturing; and manufacturing system optimization with applications to energy, communication, healthcare, or space. Outstanding applicants in other manufacturing areas that align with national manufacturing priorities will also be considered, particularly if the candidates have demonstrated interdisciplinary foci that will provide natural connections to Northwestern’s NIMSI manufacturing research center and the new NSF Engineering Research Center HAMMER (Hybrid Advanced Manufacturing: Moving from Evolution to Revolution).

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a similar discipline by the beginning of employment. The Mechanical Engineering Department at Northwestern University invites applications for an open search across all research areas to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We are particularly looking for candidates who will thrive in the highly collegial and collaborative environment that Northwestern Engineering is known for.
We seek candidates that have a solid technical foundation, strong leadership skills and a vision to lead an inclusive and diverse research enterprise that will address pressing societal challenges. Candidates are expected to strive for excellence in teaching and mentoring, as well as increasing diversity and inclusion in research and education.
Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern has outstanding faculty doing cross-cutting research that addresses national priorities in many areas including Advanced Manufacturing, AI and Design, Biosystems and Health, Computational Engineering, Energy and Sustainability, Micro/Nanoengineering, and Robotics and Autonomy. Our faculty are affiliated with 15 different interdisciplinary research centers and institutes across the university, with close ties to hospitals, research centers and industrial partners across Chicagoland and globally.
Applicants are required to have earned a doctoral degree in a relevant field prior to the start of their employment. All research areas related to mechanical engineering will be considered. Alignment of candidates’ research expertise with strategic priorities of the department, i.e., mechanics for health and medicine, AI for manufacturing and design, energy and sustainability, and aerospace engineering will be preferable.
