MECH_ENG 495: Selected Topics: Smart Structures

Technical: advanced stress analysis or continumm mechanics; MATLAB proficiency; Math: basic ODE's, PDE's

Description

Structures fail due to improper manufacturing, accidents (overloads), and aging (fatigue, environmental damage). Intelligent Structural Health Management (ISHM) systems seek to prevent catastrophic structural failure by integrating diagnostic sensors and multifunctional materials into the structures (“smart structures”) so that they can provide near real-time information about their state which can then be used to make informed decisions about their continued reliability.
