GraduatePhD Student Residency Requirement
Doctoral students must be on campus full time and engaged in research throughout the year, including summers, to qualify for funding (fellowships and assistantships).
Students are permitted time away from campus in the following circumstances:
| Residency Exception | Approval Required |
|---|---|
| Vacation and professional development time | Primary research advisor |
| Internship | CRDV 510 registration |
| Off-site research* | Advisor, DGS, and Dean's Office |
*Students conducting research off-site need to connect with Elysse Longiotti to discuss the necessary approval.
Students who do not have approved accommodations and do not meet the above criteria must follow standard residency requirements.
Leaves of absence (LOA) are defined as temporary separation from the University. Students who need to interrupt their progress towards degree may petition for a leave of absence. There are various types of leaves:
- Medical Leave of Absence: For students who must temporarily interrupt progress toward degree due to a physical or mental health condition.
- Parental Leave of Absence: For students who become new parents (whether by childbirth or adoption).
- General Leave of Absence: For students who elect to temporarily interrupt their progress and are not eligible for a medical or parental leave.
