Transfer Credits

From Other Institutions

The form used to petition for transfer credit varies, depending on when and how students want the course to transfer. Please read the transfer policies document here.

Please direct any questions about McCormick transfer credit policies to Dean Holtgreive.

For Study Abroad Coursework

Credit for study abroad courses should be petitioned using the McCormick Petition for Transfer Credits. An English version of the syllabus must be attached to the transfer petition.

Theme and unrestricted elective courses do not require departmental signatures. However, all other courses not being used towards your theme or unrestricted elective requirements require that a faculty representative from the department in which the course was taken reviews the course and signs the transfer petition. They will verify that the course is equivalent to the Northwestern course for which credit is being petitioned.

Ideally, this process should be completed as early as possible, prior to taking the course.

From Other U.S. Institutions

Math, Science, and Engineering Credits

Current McCormick students who complete coursework at another U.S. institution should complete the Registrar Office’s Transfer Petition. An English copy of the course syllabus should be attached to the Registrar’s transfer form.

This form requires that a representative from the department in which the course was taken reviews and signs the form. They will verify that the course is equivalent to the Northwestern course for which credit is being petitioned.

Please note that many Weinberg departments do not allow community college credits to transfer. Students should complete and submit the transfer petition prior to taking courses at another institution.

Departmental Credit

With special permission, courses that are not eligible to transfer in as a specific course, but rather general department credit, can be used towards major requirements.

These courses must be reviewed by both the department and Dean Holtgreive. For this process, students should complete the McCormick Transfer Petition and attached a copy of the English syllabus to the petition form.

Example: If special permission is obtained by Professor Fred Northrup (Chemistry Chair) and Dean Holtgreive, a student may be able to apply a Chem 1xx transfer credit towards a McCormick Chemistry requirement.

Theme and Unrestricted Elective Credits

Courses taken at other U.S. institutions will transfer as Gen_Cred 1xx and can be counted, by McCormick Transfer Petition, towards the theme or unrestricted electives requirement with this designation. An English copy of the course syllabus should be included in the petition.

Students who would like the actual course name (the equivalent Northwestern course) to appear on their transcript must complete the registrar’s petition form, complete with departmental signatures. An English copy of the course syllabus should be included with the petition, so that departments are able to review the course.
