Widely viewed to be the highest honor in the world of coatings, the award recognizes outstanding research or technological innovation in the fields of surface engineering, thin films, and related topics.

“I feel very fortunate to receive such an honor and wish to thank many generations of students and visiting scholars on our team who did all the hard work,” Chung said.

Chung is a professor of materials science and engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering. His research is in surface science, tribology, design and characterization of lubricant additives, hard coatings, and high-performance alloys. A prolific author of academic papers and textbooks, Chung holds numerous patents in the field.

Along with his work in materials science, Chung developed and teaches ISEN 220: Introduction to 21st Century Energy Systems for the Trienens Institute for Energy and Sustainability at Northwestern, focusing on the various renewable and sustainable energy options, personal choices in exercising these options, and the role of energy efficiency.

Chung will receive the award in May at the 2024 International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films, where he will also deliver an honorary lecture.
