Strong interdisciplinary research is a hallmark of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern. Collaborations include most other Northwestern engineering and science departments, the Feinberg School of Medicine, and national laboratories, especially nearby Argonne National Laboratory, which includes the Advanced Photon Source and the Center for Nanoscale Materials.

Our department offers MS and PhD degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, and partners with the Department of Mechanical Engineering on the Joint Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. Research is central to our students’ education, and faculty place a strong emphasis on mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.
