ELEC_ENG 395, 495: Introduction to Nanophotonics and Plasmonics Science and Technology


VIEW ALL COURSE TIMES AND SESSIONS

Description

We will cover topics that will enable students to gain a basic knowledge in key areas in nanophotonics, plasmonics, metamaterials, and nano/micro lasers. This is a rapidly growing field that will have broad applications to nanotechnologies, nanoscience, materials science, bio-photonics, physics, chemistry, and integrated optics. We will cover the following areas: (a) Near Field Imaging: Field propagation, Diffraction limit, Near field scanning optical microscope (NSOM); (b) Meta-Material and Plasmon Based Devices: Negative refraction, Perfect lens, Meta-materials, Nano-antennas, Metal plasmon resonance; (c) Nanoscale Waveguide Based Devices: Nanoscale waveguide, Micro-resonators, Photonic crystals; (d) Microcavity Based Devices: Physics of microcavity, Purcell factor, Introduction to nanolasers.

GRADING: grading will be based mainly on problem sets.

PRE-REQUISITES: Course materials will assume basic undergraduate-level knowledge in electromagnetics. No other pre-requisite is needed.
