Huang Elected International Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor Yonggang Huang is one of 74 fellows selected this year

Northwestern Engineering’s Yonggang Huang has been elected a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Huang, who holds the Jan and Marcia Achenbach Professorship in Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering, is one of 74 fellows elected this year. Interested in mechanics of stretchable and flexible electronics and deterministic 3D assembly, Huang is part of a class of nine international fellows.

“This is a great honor in engineering,” Huang said. “I am very pleased to have contributed to engineering in the United Kingdom, including serving as chair of the election committee for the Engineering and Materials Science Section of the Royal Society in London. I am the only foreign member to have chaired an election committee in the Royal Society’s more than 360-year history.”

Huang and the other fellows are drawn from every specialty from within the engineering and technology professions and cover sectors ranging from energy and defense to new materials. They have made exceptional contributions to their field: pioneering new innovations within academia and business, providing expert advice to government, and fostering a wider comprehension of engineering and technology.

“Today’s cohort join a community of around 1,700 of some of the most talented engineers and innovators in the UK and around the globe,” said Sir John Lazar, president of the Royal Academy of Engineering. “Their knowledge and experience make them uniquely well placed to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world, and our determination to advance and promote excellence in engineering remains undimmed.”

Huang has published two books and more than 700 papers in international journals, including 16 in Science and 10 in Nature. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a foreign member of the Royal Society (London).

The new class of fellows will be formally admitted at a Nov. 18 ceremony in London.
