Prerequisites

This course is for MS students pursuing the Thesis-Track Degree. Students must be in good academic standing in the Thesis-Track Degree Program.

Description

This course prepares students for the successful completion of an MS Thesis in Materials Science and Engineering. Students will develop critical skills necessary in any research domain, including problem identification, project management, and technical communication. This course culminates with the MS Thesis Presentations and submission of the student’s Research Plan, the culminating degree milestone in the first year of the Thesis-Track MS Program.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify important research problems in materials science and engineering.
  • Define your own project goals and experimental approach within the context of the materials science and engineering paradigm.
  • Develop your own research proposal and communicate the significance of your work.
  • Work effectively as an individual contributor and in collaborative teams on interdisciplinary research.
  • Recognize the breadth of research topics in materials science and engineering and discuss research challenges with your peers both inside and outside of your specific domain.
  • Build a community of practice among MS students in materials science and engineering.
