  Helen Moore: Dynamical Systems Modeling in the Biopharma Industry

  Title: Dynamical Systems Modeling in the Biopharma Industry

  Speaker: Helen Moore Ph.D., Applied BioMath

  Abstract: Quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) models are increasingly being used for decision making in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical (biopharma) industry. "QSP models" refer to systems models in biopharma that include therapy and some mechanistic level of detail. These are typically ODE (dynamical systems) models, and they are connected to data with statistical structures, e.g., using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling.

  I will show some examples of dynamical systems/ QSP models used in projects in the biopharma industry for multiple myeloma and leukemia therapy planning and will touch on equilibrium, stability, bifurcation, sensitivity, and identifiability analyses. One application of these analyses that I will discuss is the use of optimal control to optimize combination regimens. I'll also talk about one of the most important challenges across the biopharma industry currently: deciding model prediction credibility. This relies on verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ), which I will describe briefly.

  Title: Operator Learning: Algorithms, Analysis and Applications

  Speaker: Andrew Stuart, California Institute of Technology

  Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are poised to
  revolutionize the pace and nature of scientific discovery. The widespread adoption
  of AI in the sciences has the potential to integrate scientific inquiry with modes of
  hypothesis generation, data analysis, experimental design, and simulation,
  transforming our capacity to address scientific problems that currently seem
  insurmountable. The mathematical foundations of AI and ML are crucial for highquality,
  reproducible, AI-enabled scientific research. However, blindly applying AI
  and ML poses significant risks, such as the rapid acceleration of the “reproducibility
  crisis” in science. In this talk, I will discuss fundamental machine learning
  challenges and opportunities that are particularly relevant to scientific discovery,
  such as emulators, generative models, and inverse problems. These problems
  underscore the importance of incorporating mathematical and physical models as
  well as numerical algorithms into ML frameworks, highlighting exciting directions for
  future work.
