A Different Way of Thinking

It takes a different way of thinking to connect disparate fields, put big ideas into action, solve global problems, and imagine what’s next. It takes left-brain analytical skills. It takes right-brain creativity. It takes whole-brain engineering.

Our belief in whole-brain thinking goes beyond engineering and applied science. It guides how we educate our students and how we strive for innovation in our research.

This is the philosophy we live by and it has never been more important. The incredibly complex challenges we face as a society demand new ways of thinking that cross the boundaries. We need to develop the people and processes that can guide us in this new world. Change begins with us.

The opportunity is as great as the challenges are real. We see the need for a new way of thinking and working that respects and deepens the culture of individual disciplines, but more importantly encourages the innovation across disciplines that will be critical in both confronting global challenges and envisioning a new future.

Creative synthesis, adaptability, and the ability to crosslink disciplines to connect disparate ideas will be the critical skillset of the future.
