Curriculum & Requirements
PhD degree candidates may enter the program with a BS or an MS degree. PhD students are required to take 14 courses when starting with a BS degree, or 9 courses post-external MS coursework (excluding thesis). PhD students must follow the curriculum proposed in the new Architectural Engineering and Sustainable Design Specialization for the M.Sc. Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
EBE Graduate Students must register for the weekly seminar series, CIV_ENV 512 -1,2,3 each quarter during their first year.

Satisfactory Academic Progress
All students must attend periodic meetings with their advisor to discuss progress. In addition, EBE students undergo a formal annual progress review within GSTS. Students must submit an annual self-evaluation in GSTS. Furthermore, in GSTS, EBE advisors must provide students with feedback on the annual self-evaluation and provide the students with their own progress evaluation.
Candidacy
- EBE PhDs should be considered for Admission to Candidacy following completion of the required coursework. The Admission to Candidacy process should not extend beyond the 4th academic quarter of study (i.e., December of second year of study) for a student with a previously earned MS degree, or the 6th academic quarter of study (i.e., June of second year of study) for a student who entered with no MS.
- EBE PhD students must meet TGS’s English Proficiency requirement (international PhD students only).
- EBE PhD students must have a research advisor who has agreed to supervise their PhD studies before consideration.

Prospectus
The prospectus process for EBE students involves development of a written research proposal that will culminate in the dissertation. This research proposal is also delivered in oral form to the prospectus committee.
Dissertation Defense
Students must provide an oral defense with the PhD final committee.
