Vision & Mission Statement

Vision

Through our leadership in engineering education, research, and design, a future emerges where society’s assets (cities, resources, and natural environment) are developed and protected to ensure sustainable prosperity and quality of life. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invests in this future by cultivating an academic environment that fosters creative design, diversity of background and thought, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and game-changing engineering discovery.  Our faculty and graduates continue to be internationally recognized for their ground-breaking contributions to engineering scholarship, exceptional leadership, strong commitment to creative problem-solving, and professional integrity.

Mission

We inspire and cultivate innovative leaders and problem solvers prepared to address complex societal-scale challenges in areas of resilient infrastructure, smart and sustainable cities, water and energy security, climate change, mobility of goods and people, and environmental protection.  We achieve this mission through:

  1. Education that advances the intellectual
    development of our students using modern engineering curricula focused on
    quantitative and predictive methods, academic and professional mentoring, and
    service-based learning;
  2. Research that leads to new theories and techniques and transforms our ability to design, construct, and manage society’s infrastructure, control material behavior, and sustain natural and engineering systems around the world;
  3. Cultivation of a diverse community of scholars, who, through motivation to serve society, are prepared to lead management and decision-making both inside and outside of the Civil and Environmental Engineering professions.
