MLDS 490-38: AR/VR for Virtual Analytics

VIEW ALL COURSE TIMES AND SESSIONS

Description

Virtual reality and augmented reality are powerful technologies that accomplish different things in different ways. VR replaces reality, taking you somewhere else, while AR adds to reality by projecting information on top of what you're already seeing thereby providing an immersive experience. Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term that covers the various technologies that enhance our senses and includes Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies. A wide spectrum of immersive solutions is possible in this space, based on the equipment used, ranging from lower immersion/higher reach (desktop views) to higher immersion/lower reach (headset views). XR is a prerequisite to metaverse; the most recent technology push in the tech space.

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of virtual reality (AR/VR) and provide students with hands-on experience developing Visual Analytics applications for modern virtual and augmented reality systems. In the course, students will:

  • be introduced to the basic principles of AR/VR technology and metaverse,
  • review the literature on the state-of-the-art in the field,
  • explore libraries and tools that are available for developing an application,
  • complete a project that applies AR/VR for Visual Analytics (main output), and
  • explore the role and market of your software in metaverse.
