Yan Wang graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in May 2022 with a bachelor of science in mathematics, and a minor in computer science. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a solid mathematical foundation and became fluent in analytical tools, including SQL, R, Python, and Java. Her academic journey was enriched by hands-on projects on various domains, including stock forecasting, movie genre clustering and recommendation, and statistical analysis of COVID-19 data. These experiences unveiled the versatile applications of data science, fueling her enthusiasm for its potential. During the internship, she joined a research group that focuses on deep learning in healthcare. One project involved creating a model with superior adaptability and parameter efficiency for 2D medical image segmentation, particularly in scenarios with limited computational resources. She helped the group in data preprocessing and testing the model with datasets, analyzing the results, and providing feedback for further improvements. Additionally, she contributed to another project in which machine learning was used to identify the top indicators with the most significant impact between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly. These experiences provided valuable insights into the intersection of deep learning and healthcare, igniting her passion for data science and machine learning further. As a newly admitted graduate student in Northwestern University's MLDS program, Yan is eager to continue her education and expand her knowledge in machine learning and data science. She looks forward to gaining practical experience through summer internship and collaborating with talented peers on capstone projects. In the future, she aims to leverage her expertise to make significant contributions in the field of data science, tackling real-world challenges and making a positive impact on society.
