Lieutenant Tommy Cowhey graduated from the United States Naval Academy in the spring of 2014 with degrees in electrical engineering and computer engineering and was commissioned as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officer candidate. During the training pipeline, he completed courses of instruction at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Basic Parachute Training, Expeditionary Combat School, and EOD Tactical Training, earning his Basic EOD Technician qualification in 2016. Tommy’s first assignment was EOD Mobile Unit TWO in Little Creek, VA where he led an eight-man team on deployment in the Horn of Africa, responsible for regional security and force protection. After earning his EOD Officer warfare qualification and finishing a successful deployment, Tommy then reported to Expeditionary Exploitation Unit ONE where he twice deployed to Guam in command of a newly formed Task Group, serving as the Navy’s exploitation and intelligence gathering lead in SEVENTH Fleet. Following his second tour, Tommy reported to Task Force 75 as the Current Operations and EOD Staff Officer, where he planned and enabled the execution of all navy expeditionary operations in the SEVENTH Fleet for two more years. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Tommy is thrilled to be back in his hometown and back in the world of academia at the MSiA program. Throughout his career he has been in numerous leadership roles, learning to build trust and rely on his teammates in difficult situations. He also served as a staff officer in a larger organization, working to influence the policy and doctrine of his community and subordinates. By embracing advanced analytics, Tommy will expand his skillset to improve upon his dedicated service wherever his career takes him.
