Undergraduate Transportation Research Fellowship

Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) is pleased to announce a call for applications to its third annual Greenbriar Equity Group Undergraduate Transportation Research Fellowship. This fellowship was created to support summer research internships in transportation and logistics for Northwestern undergraduate students.

NUTC will award up to $5,000 to each qualifying undergraduate summer intern to conduct research in the area of transportation and logistics. Awards are made on a competitive basis. Undergraduate students enrolled in any school at Northwestern are eligible to apply.

Greenbriar Equity Group fellows will receive a $4,000 stipend. It is expected that students will devote ~10 weeks of full-time effort to the project. If needed for research-related expenses, fellows may submit an application for additional funds (up to $1,000), along with a budget and explanation for the anticipated expenses.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be an undergraduate student at Northwestern.
  • Your research must be on a transportation or logistics-related topic.
  • After completion of the summer research program, you will be expected to present the results to your faculty
    advisor and selected NUTC faculty and staff.
  • A faculty mentor must confirm their willingness to act as your advisor.

 

The proposal document must be entirely original written work of the applicant. It should contain:

  • Cover page
  • Abstract (less than 250 words)
  • Statement of why the award will be valuable to you and why the work will produce new knowledge for the
    transportation and logistics field (less than 500 words)
  • Description of the proposed work (less than 750 words)
  • Your qualifications to do the work (250 words or less)
  • Brief budget explaining how any extra funds requested beyond the base $4000 stipend are to be spent. (It is not necessary to provide any information on personal/living expenses, since this is covered in the base stipend.)
  • Personal resume (separate file)
  • Letter of Support from supervising faculty member stating willingness to supervise and why this project is valuable and interesting. *Letter must be submitted confidentially by the faculty member to Goldie McCarty (contact info below).

Submissions will be reviewed by a faculty committee. Awards will be based on the intellectual merit of the proposed work and its contribution toward addressing a problem or opportunity for the transportation and logistics industry.
