Graduates Recognized and Awards Presented at CEE Graduation Reception

2014 CEE Award recipients (l – r): Abby Christman, Rose Milavitz, Lizzy Conger, Ruthie Norval, Julija Vinckeviciute, and Derek Cheah.The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering kicked off the graduation celebration with a Graduation Reception on June 19, 2014, the eve of the Northwestern University Commencement.  Almost 240 graduates, family members, and friends attended the Graduates Recognition and Award ceremony at 5 pm which followed with a dinner at Allen Center.  It was a great opportunity for the Department to meet with the graduates’ families and friends and to help them celebrate a big milestone in the graduates’ careers.

The Class of 2014 includes 29 undergraduates for the BSCE and BSEE programs, 53 M.S. and 11 Ph.D. graduates from our areas of Environmental Engineering and Science, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Infrastructure Materials, and Transportation Systems Analysis and Planning.  In addition to recognizing each graduate with a gift, the Department also recognized six graduating seniors for their scholastic achievement.

Derek Cheah was the recipient of the Civil Engineering Senior Award.  This award was established by the Department to recognize an outstanding civil engineering graduating senior.  In addition to receiving a B.S. in Civil Engineering, Derek also received a Transportation and Logistics minor, Economic minor, and participated in the Undergraduate Honors Program.  Derek will pursue his graduate study in transportation at the University of California, Berkeley.  Derek is from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Julija Vinckeviciute was the recipient of the Environmental Engineering Senior Award. This award was established by the Department to recognize an outstanding environmental engineering graduating senior.  Julija received a dual degree, B.S. in Environmental Engineering and B.S. in Material Science and Engineering.  Julija is from Lake Villa, Illinois.

Ruthie Norval was the recipient of the Wallis S. Hamilton Award for Civil Engineering Senior.  This award recognizes the senior who best exemplifies the standards of Professor Hamilton: teacher, researcher, and professional engineer.  Ruthie received a B.S. in civil engineering with a second major in Earth and Planetary Science.  She will pursue her graduate study in structural engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.  Ruthie is from Austin, Texas.

Elizabeth Conger was the recipient of the Jimmie Quon Memorial Award for Environmental Engineering Senior.  Established by his former students to honor Professor Quon and his contributions to the academic and other professional fields encompassing Environmental Engineering. The Award is given to an environmental engineering senior who has the highest potential to make significant contributions to the advancement of Environmental Engineering and positive impact to society.  Lizzy was in the BS/MS Program with B.S. in Environmental Engineering and M.S. in Chemical Engineering.  Lizzy is from Friendswood, Texas.

Abby Christman and Rose Milavitz were the recipients of the Edwin C. Rossow Prize for Structural Engineering Senior.  Established by his former students to honor Professor Rossow’s contributions to the civil engineering profession and dedication to his students.  The Prize is given to a civil engineering student who, by activities and achievements, demonstrates great potential to contribute and to succeed as a professional in the field of Structural Engineering.  Abby received a B.S. in civil engineering.  She will pursue her graduate study in structural engineering at the University of Washington.  Abby is from Shaker Heights, Ohio.  In addition to receiving a B.S. in Civil Engineering, Rose also received a B.S. in Applied Math.  She will pursue her graduate study in structural engineering at the University of Minnesota.  Rose is from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
