EES Seminar- A Tale of Two Contaminants: Microplastic Transport and Nitrogen Cycling in Impacted Waterways- Anna Vincent

Abstract: Particle transport is influenced by a combination of biological and physical factors. In stream ecology, the nutrient spiraling framework was introduced as a mechanism for tracking the movement of nutrients between inorganic and organic phases in the water column and substrate. Microplastic, another type of particle, also moves in suspension and is trapped in the substrate. However, spiraling metrics are rarely applied to this recalcitrant form of organic Carbon. In this presentation, I will introduce basic nutrient spiraling theory and describe its application to microplastic. In addition, I will describe a few of the projects included in my dissertation which focused on Nitrogen cycling and transport in agriculturally impacted waterways. In particular, my seminar will focus on the use of winter cover crops as a conservation strategy used to mitigate losses of Nitrogen and Phosphorus during the winter and spring fallow period after cash crops (e.g., corn or soybeans) are harvested.
Bio: Dr. Anna Vincent is a biogeochemist and ecosystem ecologist, and is currently a postdoctoral scholar with the Northwestern-Argonne Institute of Science and Engineering. She completed her PhD at the University of Notre Dame under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Tank where she assessed controls on inorganic Nitrogen cycling and changes to stream metabolism following storms in agricultural streams. Prior to attending Notre Dame, she obtained a Master’s degree from Loyola University Chicago under the direction of Dr. Timothy Hoellein where she characterized microplastic transport in urban streams using classical stream spiraling metrics and assessed the effects of plastic pollution of microbial community composition. Her current work is focused on using green infrastructure to monitor climate change dynamics in urban environments. In her seminar, she’ll be presenting on a combination of work from her Master’s and PhD looking at microplastic transport and the efficacy of conservation strategies at mitigating inorganic N losses from productive landscapes, respectively.

Jimmy Quon Lecture: Valorizing Gas Streams Containing CO2 and CO- Bruce Rittman

Abstract: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important greenhouse gas, and carbon monoxide (CO) is acutely toxic. Release of these gases must be halted. One promising approach is microbiological valorization of CO2 and CO in off-gas streams. Valorization means converting the CO2 or CO to valuable organic compounds that are feedstock for the chemical and energy industries. This talk describes two distinctly different examples of valorization. The first example is valorizing the CO2 in digester biogas using photosynthetic microalgae. The benefits are to generate more methane (CH4) while converting the biogas (~65% CH4) to higher-value biomethane (>97% CH4). The second example is conversion of syngas (a mixture of CO, CO2, and hydrogen (H2)) to organic acids and alcohols using CO-fermenting and chain-elongating bacteria.
Bio: Dr. Bruce E. Rittmann is Regents Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Biodesign Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University. His research focuses on the science and engineering needed to “manage microbial communities to provide services to society.” Services include generating renewable energy, cleaning water and soil, and improving human health. Dr. Rittmann is a member of the National Academy of Engineering; a Fellow of AAAS, WEF, IWA, AEESP, and NAI; and a Distinguished Member of ASCE. Dr. Rittmann was awarded the first Clarke Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Water Science and Technology from the NWRI, the Walter Huber Research Prize and the Simon Freese Award from ASCE, the G.M. Fair Award from AAEES, the Perry L. McCarty/AEESP Founders Award, and the Camp Applied Research Award from WEF. He is the co-winner of the 2018 Stockholm Water Prize. Dr. Rittmann has published over 880 journal articles, books, and book chapters, and he has 25 patents. With Dr. Perry McCarty, Dr. Rittmann co-authored the textbook Environmental Biotechnology: Principles and Applications (McGraw-Hill Book Co.), which is now out in its second edition.
