Yujing graduated with the highest honor from the University of California-Los Angeles in 3 years, earning double degrees in Statistics and Cognitive Science. Her undergraduate degrees prepared her with competence in applying data science techniques to understand complicated customer psychology. Yujing did several research projects at the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, and the Department of Statistics, during which she utilized Python and R for statistical modeling to inform data-driven decisions. After graduation, Yujing continued her passion for exploring user behavioral data to drive business decisions by working full-time as a data scientist at TikTok and Procter&Gamble for 2 years. At TikTok, by building data dashboards and conducting A/B testings, she developed advanced data mining tools using complex datasets of billions of TikTok users’ daily interactions globally to drive user growth. Her work scope also involved building data pipelines: she led a project to automate the routine work of manually checking event tracking data to enhance the accuracy of recording user behavioral data for better recommendation algorithms (accuracy +20%). At Procter&Gamble, Yujing leveraged consumer data with quantitative tests and qualitative interviews to drive business focus from the product design stage to the go-to-market stage. For one of her major contributions, she leveraged product sense from her previous work at TikTok to optimize the performance of TikTok open-screen Ads. By establishing the dataset and applying a random forest model to analyze top drivers for Ad performance, she enhanced the average click-through rate by 8% and saved 50% budget. From her work experience, Yujing is not only a data scientist with solid technical skills, but also an excellent team player who engaged in multiple cross-functional efforts with various stakeholders including Marketing, Sales, and R&D to transform big data into easy-to-understand business insights. Therefore, Yujing believes that she can contribute to the program’s community with her insights gained from previous data analytics and real-world experiences. She looks forward to becoming a member of the MSMLDS 2024 cohort, where she will obtain professional training in the application of machine learning and data science as well as build a professional network in the industry.
