Zhenglin Wang graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics with Honors and a minor in Computer Science. During his undergraduate studies, he built a strong foundation in applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, database systems, and algorithms. He is proficient in Python, R, SQL, Java, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and has applied these tools to statistical analysis, predictive modeling, visualization, and software development projects.
Before joining the MLDS program, Zhenglin gained professional experience in data analytics through internships involving SQL-based dashboard development, data pipeline design, GPU platform monitoring, and business performance analysis. In addition, his undergraduate honors thesis research focused on improving classical distance-based machine learning methods by making them more robust to noisy observations and more capable of capturing nonlinear data structures. In this work, he proposed a reliability-weighted extension of K-Nearest Neighbors to reduce the influence of misleading observations, as well as a manifold-aware initialization strategy for K-Means Clustering that selects more representative and less redundant centroids before Lloyd iteration. He also conducted research on calibrated and explainable flight delay prediction, building tree-based models including Decision Tree, Random Forest, AdaBoost, and XGBoost. This work involved time-aware cross-validation and probability calibration, and was published in the ACM ICAISD 2025.
Through the MLDS program, Zhenglin hopes to deepen his technical expertise in machine learning and applied analytics while learning how to build interpretable and practical solutions for real-world problems. He looks forward to collaborating with peers from diverse technical and professional backgrounds, strengthening his ability to translate complex data into practical insights, and preparing for a career where he can build impactful analytical solutions. Outside of academics and work, Zhenglin enjoys traveling across countries around the world, watching action movies, and music production.
