Alex Miller graduated with his B.S. in honors physics with a minor in mathematics at Arizona State University. While studying there, he researched with particle accelerators or x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) around the world. More specifically, the focus of the research was on experimental condensed matter physics – or trying to understand how charge density waves in materials respond to light. His thesis analyzed data from the Swiss XFEL where he analyzed how atoms in a particular material responded to light perturbations. This time exposed him to the nature of data science in physics research.

He hopes to use his time at Northwestern to become a data scientist and network with other professionals. Alex is excited and believes that becoming proficient in writing AI algorithms in python is vital towards the direction of technology and research at particle accelerator facilities across the world. He is excited about exploring the job market as a data scientist and has other interests in start-ups.

Otherwise, one of his major goals this year is to land an internship at the conclusion of the program. Other than landing a job, Alex’s hobbies include: lifting weights at the gym, connecting to nature through hiking, and cooking healthy meals. He is also currently undecided about whether he wants to potentially go back for a PhD in condensed matter physics leveraging his data science training he will receive at Northwestern.
