Hongcheng Fu graduated from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics with a bachelor's degree in Information Management and Information Systems. During his undergraduate studies, he developed a strong interest in data science, particularly in uncovering relationships hidden within data and using them to understand real-world problems. Through coursework and hands-on experience, he built a foundation in Python, SQL, R, and machine learning. He especially enjoys combining coding and modeling with business understanding, using technical methods not only to build models but also to generate insights that can inform decisions.
Hongcheng has explored data science across a variety of industries, including technology, healthcare, consulting, and quantitative research. Most recently, he worked with TikTok's Global Business Solutions team on data analytics for the Latin American market, where he also explored AI-assisted approaches to data analysis and visualization. His previous experiences ranged from applying data science to procurement and document processing in the pharmaceutical industry to predictive modeling and healthcare market research. Working across different domains has strengthened his interest in interdisciplinary approaches to data science and in connecting technical solutions with the context in which they are applied.
At Northwestern, Hongcheng looks forward to deepening his expertise in machine learning and data science, collaborating with peers from diverse backgrounds, and gaining hands-on experience through the MLDS Industry Practicum. He is particularly interested in product and healthcare data science, as well as experimentation and causal inference, and hopes to pursue a career as a data scientist after graduation. Outside of academics and work, Hongcheng enjoys board games, poker, and Go.
