Hannah Chen is pursuing an M.S. in Machine Learning and Data Science at Northwestern University. She earned her B.S. in Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, with a concentration in Business Analytics and Technologies and a minor in Philosophy. Through her undergraduate coursework and projects, she developed a strong foundation in machine learning, statistical modeling, data mining, database systems, and data visualization, with experience using Python, SQL, R, and Tableau.

Hannah has gained hands-on experience applying these skills across technology and consulting settings. At Anyone, a seed-stage social media startup, she worked with a cross-functional team to develop and launch the platform’s first production-ready version. She designed its data architecture and built a PostgreSQL backend with 26 relational tables supporting user and event interactions, implemented Row-Level Security policies, and automated database testing with pgTAP to strengthen data integrity and access control. Previously, as a Part-Time Assistant at Boston Consulting Group, she analyzed transaction-level data from nationwide automotive dealership performance reports to support an automobile manufacturer’s expansion strategy. She used SQL to evaluate dealer performance, Python to clean and standardize multi-year datasets, and geographic and competitive analyses to assess potential dealership locations and market opportunities.

At Northwestern, Hannah looks forward to deepening her expertise in machine learning and exploring how advanced analytical methods can inform business and product decisions. She is particularly interested in applied machine learning, predictive analytics, and transforming complex data into actionable insights. Through the MLDS program’s technical curriculum and industry-focused practicum and capstone experiences, she hopes to further develop her technical and problem-solving skills and ultimately pursue a career as a data scientist or business analyst, combining rigorous analysis with strategic decision-making.
