CANCELLED - CANCELLED BTP Seminar Series: Colin Hisey, Northwestern University

    McCormick-Chemical and Biological Engineering (ChBE)

    12:00 PM

    EVENT DETAILS

The Biotechnology Training Program is pleased to present the following seminar by Colin Hisey:

Advancing Micro- and Nanotechnology for Extracellular Vesicle Research

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are heterogeneous micro and nanoscale particles that are released by all cells and circulate in all bodily fluids. While EVs have shown significant promise over the past two decades in diagnostic, mechanistic, and therapeutic applications, several obstacles exist which continue to limit their clinical translation. In this seminar, I will highlight several approaches to overcoming or mitigating these issues including scalable EV production using commercially available bioreactors, EV micropatterning using light-induced adsorption, and nanoplasmonic sensors combined with machine learning to classify EVs based on their Raman spectra. These versatile technologies have been developed primarily for cancer engineering applications but have also been applied to infectious diseases and reproductive health. In combination, we demonstrate the incredible potential of applying micro-nanofabrication strategies to EV research with the ultimate goal of clinical translation to improve human health.

Colin Hisey earned B.Eng. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 2018. During his PhD, he developed microfluidic devices for cancer engineering applications as a Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center Fellow (NSF) and as a Whitaker International Fellow at CEIT in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain. He then spent three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Auckland, where he helped establish the Hub for Extracellular Vesicle Investigations. He returned to Ohio State in 2021 as a LEGACY Postdoctoral Scholar and was awarded a MOSAIC K99/R00 from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIH) in 2022. In September 2024, he Northwestern University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, where his lab continues to build micro- and nanoscale platform technologies for biomedical applications.
