Fluid Dynamics of Sports

Contemporary sports analytics is focused on the analysis of performance data. At Northwestern we propose to change the state of the art by adding new metrics based on, hitherto scarce, physics-based analyses. Not only will these physics-based metrics give novel insights to coaches and players for training and strategy development, they will also positively impact spectator engagement. Our work is primarily focused on variety of ball-based sports. This effort is part of an approved prospective joint Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics between IIT-Madras, India and Northwestern University (Amaral, Contractor, Patankar).

The faculty below conduct research focused on fluid dynamics of sports.
