Study Options

Part-Time Option

The part-time, Saturday-only option is offered for working professionals. The program is completed within two years, from September to June each year. Students take two courses each Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

An ideal option for those who:

  • Wish to continue working while in the program
  • Have obligations that would prevent them from attending weekday classes

Full-Time Options

The full-time option is completed in either 10 months (fall, winter, and spring quarters) or 12 (fall, winter, and spring quarters plus the following fall quarter—which allows for a summer internship). Full-time students take half their course load on weekdays and half on Saturdays.

An ideal option for those who:

  • Are interested in completing a summer internship (optional)
  • Are international students
  • Come from a technical background
  • Have proficiency in math and programming

Cybersecurity Minor

MSIT's three-unit minor in cybersecurity is open to all students enrolled inNorthwestern Engineering's professional Master's programs.

Students earn the minor by completing five courses (one 10-week course and four five-week courses) for a total of three units. The classes will be focused on a holistic view of cybersecurity topics that are appropriate for leadership roles in this area.

Courses that make up the minor are:  The application to enroll in the minor will open in September of 2023. MSIT students submit a brief application signed by their advisor. Students outside MSIT submit the application as well as a current CV, a statement of interest in the minor, and qualifying TOEFL/IELTS scores (if applicable). Students outside MSIT should consult with their associate director or academic advisor to determine how cybersecurity minor coursework will apply toward completion of their primary degree program.
