AI Among Top Questions from Prospective MSIT Students

Associate Director Stephen Dowling shares how the program is preparing students to understand AI and help lead organizations.

More than 75 percent of organizations are using AI in at least one business function, according to the latest Global Survey on AI released by consulting firm McKinsey. The report, released on March 12, found that organizations are now focused on navigating a growing set of risks related to generative AI, such as inaccurate content and cybersecurity concerns.

Understanding those risks and how to mitigate them are a key topic of study for students in Northwestern Engineering's Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program. MSIT associate director Stephen Dowling discussed how the program addresses AI, as well as other top questions he hears from prospective students.

How is MSIT preparing students to understand and lead with AI?

The MSIT curriculum blends technical courses with business management courses. This structure ensures that students not only grasp emerging technologies like artificial intelligence but also understand how to implement these technologies strategically within business contexts. Classes such as AI & Automation tackle those questions head-on while many others address AI in their specific contexts, such as cybersecurity or information security.

You mentioned cybersecurity. How is MSIT helping students understand the complexities of cybersecurity?

MSIT recognizes the critical importance of cybersecurity and provides specialized courses that delve into this field, including Cybersecurity Leadership and IT Risk Management. Additionally, the program offers a five-course Cybersecurity Leadership minor that provides interested students with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively navigate and address contemporary cybersecurity challenges.

How can prospective students make their applications stand out?

Prospective students can distinguish their applications by highlighting their professional experience and leadership capabilities — especially in IT roles — and showcasing a clear alignment between their personal career goals and the MSIT program's curriculum. Engaging in continuous learning and obtaining relevant certifications can further strengthen an application.

What do you look for in an MSIT application?

MSIT seeks candidates with substantial professional experience in information technology, a strong academic background, and the potential to excel in both technical and leadership roles. Applicants should exhibit a commitment to leveraging technology to drive business success.

How does MSIT support part-time students who are managing school and work at the same time?

MSIT is a very flexible degree program. While most of our classes run on Saturdays, we offer several evening and online classes to help accommodate work schedules or family responsibilities. Additionally, part-time students receive the same Northwestern career counseling, networking opportunities, and job placement support as full-time students. Finally, MSIT’s study group model ensures that part-time students get to know each other personally as well as professionally and is often the start of a support network that lasts beyond the degree.

What additional advice would you share with prospective students?

I encourage prospective students to engage with the MSIT community by attending information sessions and connecting with alumni to gain insights into the program's culture and expectations. Applicants should also take time to clarify their career objectives; understanding how the MSIT program aligns with their professional goals can enhance their application and overall educational experience.

Finally, MSIT students engage with a rigorous curriculum, so be ready to tackle both technical and business challenges in our comprehensive approach to IT leadership. MSIT graduates are well-prepared for employment in any number of industries, and the program's small class sizes foster a collaborative learning environment and enriching educational experience.
