MSIT Graduates Reflect on Time in the Program

The newest graduates of Northwestern Engineering's Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program reflected on their time in the program and how it prepared them for industry work.

The latest cohort of graduates from Northwestern Engineering's Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) full-time program walked across the stage earlier this month. Before they moved on to new roles in companies ranging from Amazon to autonomous trucking company TuSimple, they took time to reflect on their experiences in the program and what advice they'd offer to prospective MSIT students.

What are the most important lessons you learned in MSIT?

Tri Nguyen: I learned how to manage my time efficiently, collaborate well with others, never be afraid to ask for help, and utilize resources well.

Amisha Agarwal: I learned how to effectively work in a group of people with different mindsets and thought processes, as well as the art of weighing multiple factors in order to prioritize tasks. I also practiced how to effectively network when a pandemic-like situation arises and you are not allowed to meet anyone in person.

Cindy Hsu: I learned how to collaborate with classmates.

How do you think the program prepared you for life after MSIT?

TN: After the program, I feel like I've improved my time management, collaboration and networking skills.

Aditya Peraboina: I was introduced to new, in-demand technologies.

AA: The program helped me learn how to handle stress and work efficiently, and also how to work effectively in a group and in a time-bounded situation, no matter what comes up.

What advice would you give to future MSIT students?

TN: Manage your time well between classes, school activities, and your job (if applicable). Connect with MSIT alumni for advice and job opportunities. Utilize MSIT and Northwestern resources (including career services, faculty and staff); Read before lectures and come in with questions. Don't procrastinate.

AA: Be interactive in classes and discuss the problems among your group members and friends. Take the study group seriously.

AP: Have a clear direction of what you want to do post graduation and choose your courses accordingly.

CH: Leverage the flexible curriculum that MSIT offers.
