"Chicago-based Fippex Operations LLC, which creates online portals through which customers such as Anheuser-Busch interact with their suppliers, has dodged those pitfalls. Working with a team of angels led by Northbrook's Jacques Gliksberg, co-founders David Pessis and Bill Burnett built their business through a series of small investments totaling $500,000 until the company seemed poised to take off last year. In January, the angel group invested another $1.4 million, and Mr. Gliksberg hopes to steer the company toward a larger, venture capital-funded investment later this year.
