MAT_SCI 406: Symmetry and Mechanical Properties of Materials

MAT SCI 332 or equivalent knowledge is required

Description

The relation between symmetry of structure and symmetry of properties is emphasized. Introduction to symmetry, scalars, vectors and tensors. Stress, Strain, linear elasticity. Plastic deformation and creep are treated with emphasis on dislocation, grain boundary, and diffusional mechanisms. Various fracture modes at low and high temperatures, in different environments, are examined.
