Nemhauser Doctoral Dissertation Award Announced

Prof. George L. Nemhauser, A. Russell Chandler Chaired Professor in Industrial & Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology has established an annual award in his name for the best doctoral dissertation. The award will consist of $1000 cash and a certificate.

Prof. Nemhauser was one of the first PhD graduates of the IEMS Department in 1961. He is the leading researcher in the area of discrete optimization and its applications especially in scheduling (e.g., airline, major league baseball, college basketball). He has won numerous honors and awards for his fundamental contributions including membership in the National Academy of Engineering, fellow of INFORMS, the Kimball Medal, the Lanchester Prize (twice awarded), and Morse lecturer of ORSA. He was named the Distinguished Alumnus of the IEMS Department in 2007.
