Barry L. Nelson Named Walter P. Murphy Professor

Barry L Nelson, professor and chair of industrial engineering and management sciences in the Northwestern University McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, has been named a Walter P. Murphy Professor. Nelson studies methods for the design and analysis of computer simulation experiments that model and optimize dynamic systems that are subject to uncertainty. His application areas include manufacturing systems, computer performance modeling, transportation and finance.

Nelson is a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), and his work has been recognized by "best paper" awards from the INFORMS Simulation Society and the journal IIE Transactions. He is co-author of Discrete-Event System Simulation (2010, 5th edition, Prentice Hall), which has been adopted by over 60 universities and translated into Chinese.
