Segal Design Institute Hosts First Annual Design Expo

McCormick’s Segal Design Institute will host its first annual Design Expo on March 9 and 10 in the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center.

The recruiting event will feature portfolios and projects by undergraduate and graduate students in Segal Design Institute programs. Design companies from throughout the Chicago area will be in attendance.

The schedule for Design Expo 2012 will be as follows:

From 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 9, seniors and graduate students in various Segal programs (including the BS degree in Manufacturing and Design Engineering, Certificate in Engineering Design, and the MS degree in Engineering Design & Innovation) will present projects.

From 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10, freshmen from McCormick’s Engineering Design and Communication sequence will present projects. More than 50 student teams will showcase original designs created for people living with disabilities. The event will include an open showcase from noon to 2:30 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 3 p.m. in Ryan Family Auditorium in the Technological Institute. Prizes will be awarded for “Best Design” and “Best Communication.”

IA Collaborative, DiMonte Group, the Product Development and Management Association, and other design companies are expected to attend.

The Design Expo highlights Segal’s continued effort to expose students to human-centered design. It expands on a previous event, the Segal Project & Portfolio Fair, a one-day event that was limited to students in two courses.

The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center is located at 2133 Sheridan Road on Northwestern’s Evanston campus.

Founded in 2007 after a donation from Gordon and Carole Segal, founders of Crate & Barrel, the Segal Design Institute provides a hub for design and research across Northwestern University through undergraduate and graduate degree offerings, outreach projects, and student-led design initiatives.
