Manufacturing encompasses processes and systems that alter the structure, surfaces, shape, and properties of materials. It is a platform that integrates fundamental sciences, design methodologies, nano-technologies, and cyber-infrastructure to meet practical needs, impact productivity, enhance creativity, and achieve environmental sustainability.

Current manufacturing research activities include process design under uncertainty, predictive science-based process optimization, surface engineering, tribology, numerical and experimental investigations of novel processes such as rapid laser-based micro-manufacturing, dieless flexible deformation, micro-machining, micro-forming, and nano-fabrication, including optical meta-materials and nano-electromechanical systems.
