Think and work like an engineer
Starting at the beginning of your freshman year, you'll experience firsthand what it means to think and work like an engineer. You’ll work with clients, solve complex problems, and make a positive impact on another person’s life through our innovative Engineering First® curriculum.
Robot Battle: Student teams participate in the annual Design Competition by building semi-autonomous robots to compete in a round-robin style tournament based on the classic board game, Battleship.
Solving the Unsolvable: All first-year Northwestern Engineering students take Design Thinking and Communication where they work on design problems submitted from nonprofits, entrepreneurs, and industry members.
Race Ready:Northwestern’s Formula SAE, Baja SAE, and Solar Car teams compete in annual national races, offering hands-on experience in research, design, and manufacturing.
Launch Your Career: Every year dozens of recruiters from top engineering, science, and technology companies participate in the Tech Expo to hire our students for full-time, internship, and co-op positions.
Dive into Research: Undergraduates can participate in research in a faculty member’s lab as soon as their freshman year.

When an engineering student at the University of Southern California landed the lead in the spring musical, people took notice — including an agent. That led Cory Bretsch to take an unusual next step after graduation: performing as a singer at Disneyland Tokyo. He then landed a role in the off-Broadway show Storyville and performed in a national Broadway tour of White Christmas.

After nearly 20 years in the advertising world, Pam Daniels was ready for the next big thing. Drawn to design thinking and the maker movement, she enrolled in the Master of Product Design and Development Management (mpd²) program at Northwestern Engineering’s Segal Design Institute.

Inspiring local youth.
Having learned to paint from her grandmother at an early age, Becca Harmon brings her love for art to the world of chemical engineering. As a PhD student, she now conducts research into the chemistry behind how oil paint dries. “By knowing what’s going on in paintings, we can develop better ones,” she says. “The essence of my research is pretty whole-brain. I’m a chemical engineer transplanted into the art world.”
