Facilities

The McCormick School of Engineering is located in several connected buildings on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus. With its main administrative offices in the Technological Institute building (called “Tech,” for short), the school also has classrooms, offices, and laboratories in:

  • Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center
  • Seeley G. Mudd Library
  • Center for Catalysis and Surface Science
  • Cook Hall
  • Mudd Hall
  • Hogan Hall
  • Pancoe Life Sciences Pavilion
  • Center for Nanofabrication
  • Silverman Hall

The Technological Institute

The Technological Institute building was initially constructed in 1941. It has more than 850,000 square feet of classrooms, lecture halls, offices, laboratories, and research facilities. In addition, it includes state-of-the-art equipment, clean rooms, a robotics laboratory, multiple computer labs for student use, the Tech Express cafeteria, and the Jerome B. Cohen Commons faculty and staff dining room.

One of the largest academic buildings in the world, “Tech” houses the McCormick School of Engineering, as well as the departments of chemistry and of physics and astronomy, which are part of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

Completed in 2012, the LEED Silver-certified Willens Wing provided “Tech” with an additional 50,000 square feet of office and lab space for students and faculty in life and biomedical sciences, as well as a two-story atrium for meetings and events.

Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center

Named in honor of a $10 million grant from the Ford Motor Company, the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center opened in 2005 as the first Northwestern University building to achieve Silver-level certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

Along with offices, classrooms, laboratories, and meeting space, the Ford building is home to:

Prototyping and Fabrication Lab

Located in the basement of the Ford building and visible from the central atrium, the Prototyping and Fabrication Lab provides McCormick students with fabrication machinery and prototyping equipment, and a safe, collaborative environment where the exchange of ideas can flourish.

Some of the available equipment and facilities include:

  • 3D printing equipment (an Objet Connex Polyjet, Forus FDM machines, and others)
  • an additive manufacturing/rapid prototyping lab
  • a mechatronics lab
  • a CAD/CAM lab
  • five CNC mills and one CNC lathe
  • a laser cutter
  • a welding lab
  • fabrication and assembly tools
  • a paint booth
