Passing of Prof. John Dundurs

It is with sadness that we share with the mechanics community the news of the passing of our dear colleague, John Dundurs, who died on Wed., Sept. 21, 2016. John, Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was 94 years old. He was born in Rega, Latvia and studied in Germany. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern in 1958. He served for many years on the Northwestern faculty, retiring in 1994. John Dundurs was an expert in elasticity, especially problems of dislocations and inhomogeneities. Among his many contributions he showed the importance of a combination of elastic constants, which arise in problems with a bimaterial interface, known as "Dundurs' constants."

John is survived by his wife, Valda, three children, Nora Dundurs, Renate (Cormac) Daly, Ilse (Kevin) Kellow, and his grandchildren Conor, Brendan and Isabelle Daly, Amanda, Emily and Cole Kellow.
