Wheeler Kearns Architects (wkarch)

Based in Chicago, Wheeler Kearns Architects is a collective practice of architects devoted to creating spaces that embody our clients’ purpose, energy, and vision. We are an 18-person firm that designs award-winning projects, ranging from single-family residences, schools, museums, galleries, theatres, and non-profit institutions. Since our founding in 1987, Wheeler Kearns has twice been named by a national jury as AIA Chicago’s Firm of the Year. The award honors sustained outstanding achievement and excellence in a body of work produced by a firm over time.

Joy joined Wheeler Kearns Architects in 1998 and became a principal in 2006. She received a bachelor of science in architectural studies from the University of Illinois and a master of architecture from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Joy has worked on numerous award-winning residential and institutional projects including the original Marwen build-out and subsequent adaptive reuse and expansion project for the Marwen Foundation, a not-for-profit arts organization that provides free visual art classes and college and career counseling to students from under-resourced communities and schools in Chicago. The project has received several awards including a National SEED Award for Excellence in Public Interest Design. Additional projects include the Richard Gray Gallery Warehouse which transformed an old machine shop into a new 5,000 sf exhibit space, and The Night Ministry’s new administrative office and emergency shelter for young adults in Chicago.
