John Rogers Elected International Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering

Rogers is one of 75 fellows elected this year

Northwestern Engineering’s John Rogers has been elected a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

John RogersRogers is the Louis Simpson and Kimberly Querrey Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Neurological Surgery, with appointments in the McCormick School of Engineering and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also is founding director of the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics and the Querrey Simpson Institute for Translational Engineering for Advanced Medical Systems. A world leader in flexible, wearable electronics, and bioelectronic medicine, Rogers is one of 75 fellows elected this year and 10 who are international.

"This recognition from the Royal Academy of Engineering is especially meaningful to me given the academy's long-standing role in advancing engineering that benefits society,” Rogers said. “I am deeply thankful to the students, trainees, and collaborators whose creativity, dedication, and curiosity have made our work possible."

Rogers and the other fellows are drawn from every specialty within the engineering and technology professions and cover sectors ranging from energy and defense to new materials. They have made exceptional contributions to their field: pioneering new innovations within academia and business, providing expert advice to government, and fostering a wider comprehension of engineering and technology.

“This year’s cohort will be joining a community of over 1,700 top engineers and innovators in the UK and around the world,” said Sir John Lazar, president of the Royal Academy of Engineering. “Together, we ensure that bright ideas are supported, scaled, and shared, turning ambition into innovation and innovation into impact. We aim to strengthen education, skills, and inclusion to inspire and equip the engineers of today and tomorrow.”

Among Rogers’s many prior awards, he has received a MacArthur “genius grant,” a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Benjamin Franklin Medal, and the Royal Society’s Bakerian Medal. He’s also a member of The Royal Society, the National Academy of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine, and was elected to the American Philosophical Society.

The new class of fellows will be formally admitted at an Oct. 19 ceremony in London.
