ASME Magazine Names Ryan Truby to Watch List
The list recognizes 25 early-career engineers who are chasing breakthroughs in their respective fields
Northwestern Engineering’s Ryan Truby has been named to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) 2026 Mechanical Engineering Magazine watch list.

Truby, June and Donald Brewer Junior Professor at the McCormick School of Engineering, leads the Robotic Matter Lab. Truby and his team work to develop material systems that give soft devices and robots bioinspired capabilities in actuation, perception, control, and power. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to solving challenges in the design, fabrication, and control of autonomous soft robots and robotic materials, Truby’s work includes synthesizing and characterizing functional soft, polymeric, and nanoscale materials, as well as developing additive manufacturing methods.
Established in 2024, the watch list recognizes 25 early-career engineers who are chasing breakthroughs in their respective fields.
Founded in 1880, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society.
