  Every Day is a Prototype
  Phil Gilbert, General Manager, IBM Design

  IBM is the largest design thinking organization in the world with more than 1,600 professional designers and 100,000 IBMers certified in IBM Design Thinking. IBM Design Thinking helps IBM meet the world's demand for fast, capable decision-making by emphasizing inclusive, interdisciplinary teams and a focus on user outcomes. The result? Bold products addressing today's most complex challenges. IBM's Phil Gilbert will share his story and the insights he's gained transforming one of the world's oldest and most respected technology companies using human-centered design and a willingness to restlessly reinvent.

  General Manager, IBM Design

  Since 2012, Phil Gilbert has led the reinvigorated IBM design program, spearheading a broader transformation of how the company's teams understand and solve complex problems. Previously, Gilbert led the business process management (BPM) segment for IBM, where he drove the simplification of its portfolio and the ease-of-use of its products. He joined IBM in 2010 via the acquisition of Lombardi Software, where he was president.

  Gilbert is a recognized leader in the technology industry, having led three successful start-ups, and is in demand around the world as an acknowledged expert and thought leader on topics of portfolio and software design, design governance, strategy, and culture. He has been awarded multiple patents, and has recently been called upon to advocate before the US Congress for a new "Digital Americans with Disabilities Act."

  The Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts is a collaboration between the Art Institute of Chicago and materials science-related departments at Northwestern University to pursue objects-based and objects-inspired scientific research. Materials research benefits ongoing work in conservation, archaeology, art history, and curatorial scholarship.

  Learn how the Center uses materials research to care for art objects in sustainable, innovative ways with Maria Kokkori, Senior Scientist in the Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts. She will be in conversation with Corey Byrnes, Northwestern Associate Professor of Chinese Culture and co-founder/co-director of the Environmental Humanities Workshop in Kaplan Humanities Center.

  This event is presented by the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science in conjunction with exhibition Actions for the Earth: Art, Care & Ecology.
