EECS Alum Can Bayram (P.h.D 11') to Join ECE Dept at UIUC as Tenure-track Assistant Professor
He received his PhD degree from Northwestern with a focus on solid state and photonics in 2011, while advised by Prof. Manijeh Razeghi, as a member of the Center for Quantum Devices (CQD).
EECS Alum Can Bayram (P.h.D 11') will be joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC) as a tenure-track assistant professor, starting in the Fall 2014 semester. He received his PhD degree from Northwestern with a focus on solid state and photonics in 2011, while advised by Prof. Manijeh Razeghi, as a member of theCenter for Quantum Devices (CQD).
Dr. Bayram is currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. His research is in development and application of novel photonic devices. His thesis work has demonstrated the first ultraviolet regime single photon detection, the first hybrid LED, and the first GaN intersubband devices. His work has been recognized widely. He received IEEE Electron Devices and IEEE Photonics Societies' fellowship awards and the Laser Technology, Engineering and Applications Award from SPIE. He was also an IBM and Link Foundation PhD fellow and the recipient of Boeing Engineering and Dow Sustainability Innovation awards. See more CQD Honors and Distinctions.
His recent work at IBM on a novel means of thin film technology achieved record-breaking specific power solar cells and was featured on the cover of Advanced Energy Materials. Bayram received the Best Paper Award at the 11th International Conference on Infrared Optoelectronics. He has (co-) authored 31 journal papers (h-index ≥16), 22 conference proceeding papers, and has 14 patents pending. For his achievements in ultraviolet-to-terahertz engineering of III-V semiconductor materials and devices, SPIE recognized him with senior member status.
