FERPA Concerns for Remote Advising
Remote advising presents the potential for unique challenges related to FERPA. Advisers are encouraged to send the letter below to all of their advisees. Additionally, at the start of an advising session please reiterate this information verbally.
Dear Student,
During these unique times we are committed to continuing to support you in your academic program. Students may make appointments with their Academic Adviser through Civitas/Inspire as they have done in previous quarters, or you may email your adviser or the school’s advising office. Sessions will be held by Zoom, Skype, or phone.
Remote advising sessions follow the same guidelines as on-campus sessions and we hope that you will find a private space to participate in a virtual advising session. Out of respect for your privacy, advisers will not conduct an advising session in the presence of another person being in the area you are located unless you have provided your adviser with a FERPA release. If during your session you have a concern for your privacy please let your adviser know you would like to stop and reschedule the session. As a reminder, recording of advising sessions is prohibited and students requesting the use of assistive technology as an accommodation should direct such requests to AccessibleNU.
