EECS alumnus Dr. Zachary Bischof (PHD 16') has been awarded the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Overseas Researchers by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. This prestigious and highly competitive fellowship awarded 124 recipients out of 1221 applications and will directly sponsor Dr. Bischof's research at the IIJ Innovation Institute focused on improving user QoE by network traffic coordination in collaboration with Research Director Dr. Kenjiro Cho.

The purpose of JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Overseas Researchers program is to provide opportunities for young postdoctoral researchers from overseas to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in Japanese universities and other institutions.

Zachary Bischof received his PhD in 2016 at Northwestern University. He worked under Prof. Fabián Bustamante as a member of AquaLab. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering with a minor in Japanese Language and Culture from Northwestern University in spring of 2009.

AquaLab conducts research on large-scale distributed systems and networking. Their approach is mainly experimental, focusing on the design, deployment and evaluation of systems that people use. Much of their work is guided by the unique perspective provided by devices at the edge of the Internet and captured through their users/collaborators who adopt and use the software. Their team is driven by a desire to provide solutions to real network and systems problems, while they also take pleasure in the scientific and engineering contributions that are made.
